Getting out of the bedroom and into the rest of your house with some creative ideas for your sexy self portraits

As a photographer, it took me almost two decades to finally turn the camera on myself. Naturally, when venturing into this territory, the first place to start was on the bed. Boudoir, bed—seemed like a match made in heaven, right? Well, it didn't take me long before I ran out of sexy ways to pose myself on that flat surface. That's when I decided to venture out into the rest of the house to find some exciting new spots to explore, and lo and behold, with a dash of imagination and often a good giggle at myself , I found there are a plethora of fun spaces to take self-portraits around the house.

Kinky kitchen

Now, understandably, the kitchen is not the first place that comes to mind when thinking of sexy photoshoot locations. I have no culinary skills to speak of, so my culinary contribution in our home mostly involves me being naked on things. I think both me and my darling husband agree that this arrangement works well, seeing as he can and does actually cook, bless him! The kitchen offers a multitude of fun ways to explore shooting. There are counters to lounge on, cupboards to reach up towards, ovens to bend over, and fridges to coyly open—things that may seem mundane until the clothes come off.

Dining Room Table

Yes, we're back to food again, and I'm definitely hungry as I write this. The dining room offers a multitude of shooting options. The table is a great space to play on. Shooting from a lower angle, it offers a great surface to bend over, creating an aesthetically pleasing angle. Then there's the tabletop itself. Lying down, draped across, or kneeling—make it your playground. Tables of any kind are a fantastic way to add variety to your shots.

Cheeky chairs

For those who know my work, you'll know I absolutely love using seating of any kind. Chairs and stools are incredibly versatile and can be used to create a wide range of fun poses and angles. They're also great for highlighting the parts we love and maybe diverting focus from the parts we don't love as much. You can choose to shoot full frontal with as much exposure as you please or turn the chair around for a more subtle shot, leaving things to the imagination.

When using stools, chairs, or couches, I'd encourage you to think unconventionally and get as creative as possible. Chairs themselves are pretty straightforward, so how you pose yourself will become the focus. It might not feel very natural at the time, but the more fun you have with the poses, the more creative the resulting shot—and the more giggles in between when you inevitably fall off one at some point.

Bathroom and Shower

A place where you're mostly naked, or at least have your pants down, the bathroom and shower are great places for some steamy shots. The lighting is usually softer with smaller windows, and water droplets running down your skin will always ignite the imagination. Window light can make all the difference in a shot. You could also play around with the mirror and the countertop, just please remember to keep the toilet out of the shot!

Mirror

The mirror not only captures your beauty from different angles but also allows you to create intriguing reflections and doubles your presence in the frame. Whether you're playfully teasing your reflection or using a more intimate pose, the mirror adds depth and dimension to your self-portraits.

While these suggestions might seem quite general and perhaps even obvious, sometimes we just need a little reminder that, while the bedroom is indeed a sexy place, there are so many other location opportunities in your own home where you can get creative and take some beautiful shots of yourself. So, go on, get sassy beyond the sheets and explore the sensuous potential of your home!
